A Very Impressive HeadphoneI got this beautiful Sony MDR-XD400 Stereo Headphone on Amazon.

Enjoy this amazing headphone!
Amazing Headphones!I got these to replace some cheap Philips that had broken on the right side only about 5 to 6 months after I got them, and while that can was a bit lopsided it still worked fairly well. Then I got these from Amazon recently and they sound sooo much better by far, and much louder on the same volume setting as the Philips did. Of course, they originally retail for about 2.5x what I paid for the Philips on sale at a store so they should sound better.
I'm much happier with these and hope that they'll last for a long time. However, I'm a bit concerned with the inner rubber strap that's held on by two tiny pins not unlike those used on watchbands, so I'm also hoping that those are much stronger than I might think.
There doesn't seem to be all that much difference between movie vs. music modes, or at least that I can tell. Maybe my ears just aren't quite as discriminating as a true audiophile's, I guess.
They fit comfortably on my head, a bit snug but not too tightly, even with my glasses on, which they also help hold in place. It's nice not worrying about those slipping down my nose for once. The earpads are covered with a material that I don't like so if it's possible I hope to find a cloth pair to place over them. The other ones had those and they felt nice; the best thing about them, I thought.
Overall, I highly recommend these.
awesome headphonesthese headphones sound so good you will never want to listen to your stereo through your speakers again. i love the extended cord so i can lie in bed and listen to my stereo at night especially those sleepless nights. the magnets on these headphones are huge to produce the awesome sound and extra solid bass that you can actually feel when you crank up the volume a little. i do not know if other headphones out there have magnets this big.do not hear them at high volume cuz they are very powerful. they fit very comfortable. i highly recommend these headphones to anyone out there that likes to listen to music through headphones
Balanced sounding, sound price.I just got these phones after reading up quite a bit about them online, and they are just about perfect for their price. The bass that these cans put out is more clearly heard than GW Bush's lies during a State of the Union speech. The mids are very distinctly found between the highs and lows, and the highs are crystal as can be without sounding saturated or staticy. I was pretty entheused to hear these things when I got them; I took them out of the packaging, plugged them in and ran them on a few different sounding tunes. I started off with some nice idm/electronica so that I could get a feel for the bass aspect of them, and they were very solid on that end. They seem to be able to produce very deep lows with seemingly no stress. The bass isnt muddy or restrained or half-hearted. It is textured, smooth, and clean. I went on to some experimental noise, here is where I noticed that the highs are sparkling. I like a lot of music that has static and white noise, whir and drone, and these phones can distinctly produce the right sort of highs for this sort of music without being pierce-y or overdriven. The mids and balance between the mids, highs and lows, were tested with some singer songwriter style folk and then some jazz. Ive read some things about the vocals seeming nasally on this model of Sony's, but I havent heard anything remotely nasally, infact, it seems the opposite. The vocals I hear on these cans are full and very acoustic and natural.
Ive compared these to my old phones a few times and the results are amazing. They are extremely comfortable and look neat and unique compared to other more expensive phones. I am pretty sure these have the same driver as the Sony Studio Monitor Series DJ Headphones MDR-V700DJ, but the MDR-V700DJ's earcups dont cover the entire ear. I would suggest the MDR-XD400's over the other model for home listening; my friend has a pair of MDR-V700DJ's and mine seem more comfortable.
These really are the ultimate home headphones for under a hundred bucks, and I could easily see them working great in a professional audio/media production enviornment. They produce a surround sopund effect and handle all the range one need's for a pleasurable and full media entertainment experience.
Overall, these cans are spectacular, and probably worth double what Sony is selling them for, much less including the bargain price on amazon. They come with a nice and long chord extension, and a plug adapter which is wonderful for far away listening. (I can now make coffee in my kitchen while my pc sits in my din and all the while I can listen to whatever I want.) The sound is more than great, they look neat, and they are a kickass price.
Fantastic Headphones at a great price!I bought these headphones after trying a couple of cheaper philips and sony sets and also reading nothing but good reviews. These headphones are fantastic the sound quality is excellent, I use them for watching TV/Movies at night, and they do a top job. Other headphones I tried sounded quite tinny. these just bring movies and music alive. also these are the most confortable headphones I have ever worn. You dont even realise you have these large things on your head. Other headphones Ive tried tended to get quite uncomfortable after a short time. They do sound better after about a day or two, to break them in. The Movie/Music switch dosent seem to do much/anything. These headphones are well worth the price.
Let me just say this...I have been an audiophile since I was 17 and started to work full time just to spend thousands of dollars buying audio equipment for my home and car.
That being said, these headphones are great. I have been shopping around for a week, looking for something in this price range. They were a huge step up from my Sennheisers 457, which were adequate, but simply not good enough for sound coming from a good clean source, such as my Creative X-Fi in my PC, or my Kenwood 600 watt home theater receiver..
I've tested them on games like Half Life 2, Battlefield 2, and Doom 3. I haven't watched any DVDs yet but I've played a bunch of music on them as well. They needed a little break in like any other pair of good headphones. Out the box they were a little stiff but give them 24 hours and you'll be ok.
The MDR-X400s are perfect for my set up. I really only use headphones for lots of gaming and occassionally listening to music on my PC, but I usually listen to things on my 5.1 theater, just putting on headphones to be quiet. Anyway, I know what good speakers sound like.
With these headphones I can hear all the nuances and probably more than I can on my 5.1 home theater. Subtleties are definately brought up in what you are listening to. Basically yeah, I can say that these sound better than my modest but nice $1500 home theater. Yep. I'm used to listening to stuff from my optical Playstation 2 out, DVD coaxial out.. or my PC on my home theater as well, and with these headphones, I can actually hear MORE. Which is kind of sad really. I was just saying to my fiance how I should sell my home theater and make a bunch of $$, and then just buy another pair of these for her. I'm serious, they sound that good, altough they dont really have the whole home theater effect. Their still 50mm speakers pressed up against your ear.
BTW the "movie mode" just seems to make bass a little heavier and muddier, like I read in other reviews before purchased. They are correct. In my opinion, music mode sounds perfect.
Just an honest review from a person like yourself who was looking for good headphones for the price.
Scrumtrilescent! These headphones are delightful. No. No. They are brilliant. No, no, no, no. There is no word to describe its perfection, so I am forced to make one up. And I'm going to do so right now. Scrumtrilescent.
Cons: they are pretty loud outside of the ears, so roommates may be a problem in closed proximities. They look ridiculous on my head, i would never go in public in with these.
Pros: They sound very good, and 70 bucks is worth it. Comfortable and good for people that sit at their computer for continuous hours.
Sony can ROCK!All I have to say, is "WOW!". These headphones pound hardcore in every aspect. Highs, mids, lows, you name it, it does it - and VERY well! I was a little skeptical at first, with it being a Sony product, but they've proven something different with this pair of headphones. I've owned a pair of the Bose Triport headphones before, and the sound quality from them compared to this Sony pair is almost identical from what I can remember - but the bass on the Sony MDR-D400 far surpasses that of Bose! Even though these headphones are absolutely HUGE, they have to be the most comfortable cans I've ever worn. The padding on the earpieces is very thick and soft, so don't expect your ears to hurt, even after several hours of use. The only tiny problem I have with these cans is the cord that attaches directly into the left earphone - instead of a plastic cord, like most headphones have, this one is woven fabric, and if you move around too much while there's no music playing, the vibration of the fabric against the plastic opening reverberates into the speaker, causing a slight "scratching" noise. Of course, this is very minor and is not noticeable when music is being played. So in conclusion, if you're looking for the sound quality of Bose but don't have (or don't want) to spend the money for a high dollar pair, this is your #1 alternative! 5 STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!
