The Spirit XZ-2 is a 4-string bass featuring the same great look and ergonomic design of the Steinberger XQ Series and features the trademark headless neck with the patented Double-Ball ™ tuning system. Other features include the patented double-ball Steinberger bass bridge with direct-pull, 40:1 ratio machine heads, and two (HB - HB) EMG Select⢠bass pickups. Like all Steinbergersthe XZ-2 is perhaps the world's most "travel-friendly" bass ever made. It comes complete with a heavy-duty gigbag and, being only 38.75" in length, it can fit in places where other basses can't! Also features a 24 Fret Rosewood Fingerboard and Solid Wood construction. Steinberger XZ-2Excellent instrument:
Finish - stunning. The catalog and MusicYo pictures don't do it justice.
Balance - very good, not neck-heavy in the slightest, beautifully lightweight, just "sits there" and lets you get on with it.
Neck - good, action fine, just a hint of buzz in one place, easily cured. Have paid much more for far worse.
Sound - good. Nice range, I can get everything I want through my current amp setup from mellow "string bass" to twang. Lots of nice comments (as well as the usual "how do you tune it?"); the tone control is a bit fierce, particularly if volumes are turned down, but all quite predictable.
Setup - not too bad as delivered, but needed a tweak, as you'd expect. Strings were not that good, but a decent replacement set made a big difference. A bit stiff at first, now playing in nicely after 3 weeks or so.
The free cover is poor, I'm really glad I added a hard case.
Delivery was great, (under 4 days to UK).
