Product Description
The Darbuka is a goblet shaped Turkish hand drum. It is a member of the Doumbek family of drums. In the Turkish style, they play a lot with the fingers. This drum has a long, narrow neck, and a much longer sustain than other types of doumbeks. ... These drums are all hand made. The aluminum darbuka (A01, A02, A03, A0310) starts with a disk of aluminum that is put on a lathe. As it spins they push on it to put it into its final shape. Then it is embossed, every dot struck by hand. We put a tunable Mylar head on it. ... A more professional kind of darbuka (A05, A06, A07, A08, A0810) is made of copper or brass. It's made the same way, spun and shaped. Sometimes it's covered with brass, chrome, painted and engraved. When it's made of copper, a heavier and warmer metal, that creates a much deeper, rounder, more formed sound. ... Doumbeks: This family of drums are goblet shaped, and played with the hands. Their sounds range from very deep to high. ... Traditionally, the doumbek was made of clay, with a head of goat or fish skin. Some are inlaid with bits of shell, wood, or plastic. Today many of these drums are made of modern materials, such as aluminum, with a Mylar head. They may be embossed, painted, or covered with vinyl. Others are made of copper, and sometimes plated with brass or chrome. ... The Doumbek comes from the Middle East and North Africa, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Persia. In Egypt they call it tabla. In Israel it is the doumbek, darbeke in Syria, tombak in Persia, darbuga in Morocco. ... Traditionally the doumbek would be accompanied. A Middle Eastern ensemble could include the riq (Arabic tambourine) and dof (frame drum), and some melodic instruments, such as the ney and long flute, the oud (the Middle Eastern lute) and the violin, kanun or santur, in Persia. The doumbek is the main instrument for folk music and belly dance, because of its wide range of sounds. It's been used in pop music, fusion, drum circles, and therapy.
