This is the first drumset I bought. I had never played drums before but had wanted to learn for a long time. After opening the box and setting it up, which was easy though it came with no instructions, I tried to tune it and play on it a bit, but it didn't sound right. I called my friend Tom over, who was in a band, and he told me it was hopeless until I bought new heads. I just replaced the batter heads (the ones on top) with some Remo pinstripes - the whole set is less than $40. The cymbals were also pretty terrible, so Tom lent me some of his, and now the set sounds great. I'm getting ready to buy my own cymbals so I can quit mooching, and that will be another $175, which is why I say be ready to spend another $200 for it to sound great. I am buying Wuhan crash and ride cymbals, which are great for the money, and Zildjian hi-hats.
If you don't want to have to upgrade your set, you're pretty much out of luck unless you buy a $1200 or more set. This is a great deal for the money and requires little upgrade cost - the drums and hardware are great. As I progress, I'm sure I'll buy a nicer drumset - probably a Yamaha or a Tama - but for now, and probably for the next couple of years, this Pacific Drums EZ is great.
