Reviews

5.0 Not exactly K-series, but outstanding for recording
This cymbal set is a radical departure from the traditional K-series sound, which runs to tonally dark. The cymbals that come with this set are more like A Customs than K-series.

You get the following:
18" ride - this cymbal is relatively heavy and has a bright tone with high definition. The nice feature is the large bell, which is nearly identical to the large bells on the A Custom series. The cymbal has heavy hammering that create nuances, but there is no dry or dark tones associated with the K and K Custom line of cymbals.

16" crash - fast opening and loud crash with quick release. It's a cross between a small crash and a large splash in sound. This cymbal has the traditional K-series bell.

Hi-hats - these are the inverse of traditional hi-hat configurations with the heavier cymbal on top. Also, the top hat is actually 13 7/8 inch with a lighter 14 inch bottom. The bell, like the ride, is large and more like the A Custom series. Great ride sound with a well defined "chick".

Also included is a nice cymbal bag and a DVD featuring Steve Gadd explaining the reasons he selected the cymbals in the series and their characteristics. He plays a few sequences of amazing drumming to showcase the cymbals and his own unique style.

I do not personally like this set for on-stange work, but have to admit that they are ideal for recording. I was also surprised at the differences between these cymbals and the others in the K- and K-custom lines. I use both the K Custom Dark series and the Dry series and the difference between with of those families of cymbals and the one in this set are dramatic. I strongly recommend that you try these cymbals out at a local store before making a purchase decision.
