Product Description
The Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster lets you carry a wireless network wherever you go. There's a built-in access point, which lets you connect SpeedBooster-enhanced and regular Wireless-G and Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also an Ethernet port to connect your wired PC. The Router function ties it together and lets your PCs share a wired or wireless Internet connection. The travel-friendly form factor includes a built-in power supply and antenna -- it even comes with a travel case! Create a temporary, personal, wireless access "bubble" in your hotel room. Just plug the Router directly into the wall, and connect the hotel's fast Internet service cable. Then use the Router's push button setup feature to easily connect and configure your wireless devices -- push the button on the Router and on your other SecureEasySetup-enabled wireless device to automatically create an encryption-secured wireless connection. You can also create a shared-access bubble attached to a wireless Internet connection to use multiple devices on a single hotspot account in a coffee shop or airport lounge
To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions with WEP or extra-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.
The Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster lets you bring the convenience of wireless networking everywhere you go.
Reviews
good range, small and lightI'll be using this in hotels from now on; I used to carry a dlink di-614+ but with this I can share wireless hotspots as well. My only two reservations: 1) it gets very warm. 2) when using it to share a wireless connection, you can only use it to share an unsecure connection; i.e. it can't associate with a WEP or WAP access point.
Great router in a super-small package. This router has performed flawlessly since I bought it. I use it mostly for traveling for wired hotels. Very easy to setup and use. It also has super-bright LEDs that make it easy to read from quite a distance. The padded travel case it comes with is a nice extra touch.
If you travel, you MUST buy this! This travel router provides me the flexibility to work frmo anywheere in my hotel room meaning I am not confined to the desk provided that usually is in some dark corner of the room. In fact, if I choose, I can now even work and surf the internet from the comfort of my bed :-)
Linksys Travel RouterGreat product for the seasoned Business traveler. Hook it up and be free to move around your hotel room with your laptop
Linksys WTR54GS Wireless G Travel RouterSuperb quality, love the addition of a LAN port too for wireless printing.
Outstanding productThis is an outstanding product. Very compact, performs flawlessly. I was able to set it up in just a few minutes when in the office, and when I took it on the road it performed as expected. I like being able to move anywhere in the hotel room, and I REALLY like having a firewall between me and the hotel network.
Road Warrior Dream - Wartless and AllI'm a road warrior. I've been wanting a router with no wall wart (110-240v) and an ethernet port, primarily for VoIP devices. Two travel routers came close. The Linksys WRT54GC which unfortunately uses a wall wart. Wall warts are just one more thing to pack or forget somewhere. Apple's Airport Express lacks an ethernet port for VoIP. Finally, the WTR54GS gets it right by me.
The Goods:
1. No wall wart needed. Accepts 110-240v.
2. Features an ethernet port.
3. The range of the device is similar to the range of the other half dozen routers I've owned. Certainly good enough for a hotel room, conference room or other road warrior crib.
The Bads:
1. The menu system isn't responsive in FireFox. Seems to get hung on some menus. Anyone else see that?
2. No QoS, at least in the initial firmware. Very disappointing as this was suppose to be a VoIP centric device.
3. The AC plug doesn't extend/retract smoothly. Perhaps I've received a flawed unit.
In conclusion, this may become my primary travel router but I'll be looking out for firmware updates.
Superb Travel Companion (also for office and small workgroup setup)I have just received this unit and it is superb! Being a long time client of Linksys I have come to expect the kind of flawless setup and full feature set. The novelty in this unit is that it may also connect to the internet wirelessly (other than the usual broadband wired connection). I have had a few travel routers (DLink PocketRouter, 3Com Travel Router as well as Linksys Compact Router). I have been replacing them in the order above and now have moved to the WTR54GS as my travel and mobile unit. I believe that now I'll settle down for this unit for a while.
A great travel package includes a PDA such as the iPAQ 5550 with LifeView LifeJAcket and ThinkOutside StowAway bluetooth keyboard and mouse, as well as the Linksys WTR54GS. With that one can use a hotel TV as monitor, keyboard and mouse and still enjoy a wireless connection in the room and neighbourhood. All works superbly!
Why buy linksys when you can buy apple airport expressGet an Express! Its about the same price, same functionality, but also features streaming audio to your stereo, and wireless printing! a no brainer. IMHO.
Wireless connection to internet doesn't work/Bad supportI bought the WTR54GS because it was advertised as able to connect to a wireless access point and to then share that wireless access point wirelessly or using an ethernet cable.
I got mine today and the access point connectivity, although supported in the firmware, does not work. I'm still able to connect to a wired internet connection and share it wirelessly, but the device simply will not connect to a wireless hotspot.
As usual, the people at Linksys's technical support division in India know absolutely nothing about this product, and it takes more than an hour to finally reach the people in the U.S. who really know how it works. Ultimately, they told me to return it.
I'll update this review if the new one works any better.
